Clearcutting: An Essential Silvic Tool

Ecological extremists and misinformed environmentalists routinely tag clearcutting as shortsighted and demeaning to forests. This misconception dates back to the early 1900s, when clearcutting was a form of timber mining. The goal was to harvest all available timber without regard to soil erosion and with no effort made to regenerate the cleared land.

Roll ahead 100 years to today in which most consulting foresters will quickly assert that clearcutting has become an essential management tool for regenerating and maintaining a sustainable, healthy forest. Modern clearcuts occur on much smaller pieces of land. They are prescriptive, with a rehabilitative purpose that’s beneficial to habit and the overall environment.

Today, the forest industry adeptly balances the delicate relationship between harvest and regeneration. Modern harvest practices have become an important remedial tool in a management plan.
