North American Tree Species

Englemann spruce (Picea engelmannii):  Engelmann spruce grows in a humid climate with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. It occupies one of the highest and coldest forest environments in the western United States, characterized by heavy snowfall and temperature extremes of more than -50° F to above 90° F.
Eastern hemlock  (Birmingham Botanical Gardens)

Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis):  Eastern hemlock casts some of the densest shade of any forest tree.  Because foliage holds much snow, snow depth under hemlock is much reduced.  Deer avoid floundering by yarding up in hemlock groves during heavy snows.
