Who founded Earth Day? 

Former U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson developed the Earth Day idea. Leaving the Senate in 1981, Nelson now serves as counselor of  The Wilderness Society and continues to promote Earth Day.

When was the first Earth Day? 
Twenty million participants attended rallies and teach-outs all over the United States in 1970, the first year Earth Day was organized.

Is there still an Earth Day? 
Yes.  Every April 22.  This is the 32nd anniversary of Earth Day and the theme for the latest event is "Protect Our Home."

What organizations support Earth Day? 
Earth Day is supported by numerous organizations.  Some of  these organizations can be found by reviewing the Earth Day Network board of directors:

Where is Earth Day promoted? 
The day  involves tens of thousands of events, from rallies and teach-outs to concerts and earth fairs. It supports environmental awareness in cities throughout the world.  You can find an event close to you here.

What does Earth Day try to promote? 
There are multiple campaigns going on this Earth Day, 2002.  Here are the campaigns:

  • World Summit on Sustainable Development - A Call to Action - In August 2002, tens of thousands of participants will come together at the World Summit on Sustainable Development to consider how to move the world onto a sustainable path.
  • The Ecological Footprint - The Ecological Footprint, a project of Earth Day Network and Redefining Progress, measures how much land and water is needed to produce the resources we consume and dispose of the waste we produce.
  • Community Environmental Health Assessments - For Earth Day 2002, people will come together in communities all over the world to hold Earth Day Dialogues.
  • Car Free Day - Earth Car Free Day, a thematic event held annually in conjunction with Earth Day, is a pattern break. By riding public transportation, taking a bicycle, or advocating for a vehicle-free zone, individuals and whole communities can take action to advance healthier, more sustainable ways of getting from place to place.
  • Global Tree Planting - Protect the Earth by giving it Global ReLeaf! All over the world, people will plant trees as part of Earth Day 2002 celebrations. Plant trees in support of our priceless forests and the diverse life forms they support.
