Pink and White Lady's-slipper - Cypripedium acaule
A rare site is to see a pink lady's-slipper. Even rarer is to find both a pink and a white growing together. A leafless stalk bears 1 flower including a slipper-like lip petal. The flower is one of the largest native orchids in the United States and grows both on low, sandy sites and in higher rocky mountainous sites. The plant, also known as pink moccasin flower, is seen in April and May. Poaching is a major problem for lady's-slippers and they rarely survive transplanting. Some botanists believe their future survival is bleak.
