Ring Shake and Wind Shake - High Wind Damage to Trees
Tree Ring and Wind Shake
Shelby Snider
Shake is a lengthwise grain separation between growth rings, or a break through the rings and called radial shake. Ring shake and wind shake is tree damage not usually associated with disease or insect but by the wind. Still, there is a bacterial link and it is thought that some infection is usually present in the annual ring that caused the cup shake, ring shake or round shake to occur during high winds.
Ring shake can be caused by high winds but often initiated by other environmental factors like fire and disease. Wind shake is caused by a partial separation of the complete annual ring caused by wind where no fire or bacteria is present (see photo).
