There are several beautiful boulder-strewn hills covered with trees in the northwest section of Central Park. Some of the hill sides are covered in choke cherry and black cherry. This particular grove is east of the paved West Drive and just north of Great Hill.

Choke cherry is a small tree, less than 30 feet tall. It is easily confused with black cherry. Here, you can see small choke cherry trees under a stand of larger black cherry trees.

Black cherry is native to Central Park and the most important native cherry found throughout the eastern United States. The commercial range for a high-quality tree is found in the Allegheny Plateau of Pennsylvania, New York and West Virginia. The species is very aggressive and will easily spring up where seeds are dispersed. Read more about: Black Cherry
